Prices for decorating work can vary greatly in London so i’d like to break down how I price jobs and hopefully shed a little light on some reasons why quotes from different decorators can vary so much.
Probably the biggest factor in pricing a job is how much preparation work is involved. Essentially the more time a decorator spends on preparation the more attractice the finish will be and the new paint work should last longer before redecoration is needed again.
So if you previously decorated your property to a high standard a few years ago then the prep work required will be more minimal and essentially we can get on with the painting sooner so the price is lower.
However if the paintwork is 5+ years old, the caulk is cracking on the skirting and there’s lots of yellow gloss about then more “TLC” with filling, sanding and priming is the only way to restore things to a good state for a new coat of paint.
I think where a lot of the large price differences between decorators comes from is that many decorators who price low to win the work wont spend as much time (or any) on preparation.
To be fair to them they do what they say they will do and paint. But in my experience this approach will not leave a long lasting finish and the cracks will begin to appear (literally) not long after they have left.
So here are some guidline prices for redecorating different rooms where an average amount of prep work is required.
- Medium sized main living room – £900
- Medium sized master bedroom – £800
- Medium sized kitchen – £700
- Smaller bedrooms / bathrooms / small kitchens – £500+
- Ensuites, utilities etc- £300+
Another factor in the overall price is the cost of paint. Using Leyland trade Vs Little Greene paints will make a significant difference to the overall cost for example.
